Eric Stuyvesant is a writer, producer, director and actor. In August of 2000 he became a single custodial father. Taking a year to adjust and reflect on his new situation he began to ponder the meaning of Custody. Did he have Custody of his kids, or was he imprisoned by his circumstance? The end result was a movie script called Custody. In his new ordeal, Stuyvesant found that even the simplest of tasks were suddenly difficult. “I had three young boys between the ages of 2 and 6. I couldn’t just leave at night and run to the convenience store because I had a hankering for something that wasn’t in the fridge. My wife, who I used to share responsibilities with, was no longer around. She had moved across the country to pursue new romantic interests. I rarely had a moment to myself, and I felt trapped.” In addition, Stuyvesant also found that the burden of childcare was overwhelming. “While I did receive a small stipend the government likes to call Child Support, my meager salary was gobbled up by the enormous costs of day care. I was too proud, I suppose, to ask for help and I soon found myself barely treading financial waters. I never knew what utility might be turned off next.”
When it came time to film Stuyvesant used what resources he had available, trusted in God, and called on countless favors from actors and musicians to help make the project complete. “The film was done for less than $3000,” says Stuyvesant, “But when you have no money available, $3000 is everything and more. Those in the picture and behind the camera dedicated time and effort and gave their heart and souls to complete this project. Without them I never would have succeeded. The end result: A movie that people just get. The understand the emotional turmoil of the characters because they’ve been down the road themselves.”
